A FIVE-CASE INLAID LACQUER INRO DEPICTING AN OWL IN A CHESTNUT TREE

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Bearing a lustrously polished roiro ground finely decorated in shades of gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with e-nashiji, kirigane, and inlays of aogai and gold foil to depict an owl perched on a fruiting chestnut tree, the gnarled trunk continuing onto the other side with two chestnuts borne on an extended stem, covered in a husky bur. The interiors of rich nashiji with gold fundame rims.

With a chalcedony ojime.

HEIGHT 9 cm, LENGTH 5.4 cm

Condition: Very good condition with wear and traces of use, particularly along the edges and interiors. Expected minor losses to kirigane and gold foil.
Provenance: Ex-collection Lt. Col. J. Bellhouse Gaskell. Glendining & Co., Catalogue of Japanese lacquer, Inro, Sword, Furniture and a Few Other Curious from the Collection of Lt. Col. J. B. Gaskell Collection, London, 1919, lot 228. Ex-collection Maurice Gar?on, collection number 238. Two labels from the ‘Collection Maurice Gar?on’ to the interior, inscribed ‘238’ and ‘G 148’. The interior with a copy of the original listing from the Glendining sale, inscribed ‘Gaskell Sale Dee’ia’. Maurice Gar?on (1889-1967) was a French novelist, historian, essayist, and lawyer, known for his works Le destin exécrable de Guillemette Babin (1948) and Avec André Gide (1951) among others.
