Koloman Sokol Dramatic Wood Cut Print: Signed and dated 1954. A bullfight with the bull winning. The bull is charging with picks in his back ready to pounce on the downed rider and horse. People crouch behind the fence enclosures, and one tall sarape-wrapped figure perches on a fence post as if a statue. Dramatic clouds form overhead.
Koloman Sokol?(12 December 1902 – 12 January 2003) was one of the most prominent?Slovak?painters,?graphic artists?and?illustrators. He was a founder of modern Slovak?graphic art.
Sokol's work was inspired by?Vincent van Gogh,?K?the Kollwitz,?George Grosz, and strongly by the expressionism of the?Die Brücke?Group. Initially, he concentrated on graphic techniques, which he later enriched by drawing and painting in Mexico. His paintings are often dramatic in presentation.His works frequently depicted suffering, penury and human pain. He also created numerous?woodcuts. 24" X 19 1/2"
