description_en:
Dim.: ca. 13 x 13 x 1,5 cm (each tile)
Dim.: ca. 156 x 65 cm (the total mural)

This mural served as a backsplash for a stove, rather than being part of a classical tile scheme on a wall. According to the author, there are approximately 33 complete murals left, and another 54 incomplete, of which in some cases only one single tile remains.

- dr. J. Herbert van den Berge: Haardachterwandtableaus uit de eerste helft van de zeventiende eeuw, p. 12, Tegel 28/2000, Stichting van Vrienden van het Nederlands Tegelmuseum. In this interesting article the owner describes the various types of important murals. Their subject mostly comes down to historical and mythological figures, although allegorical depictions, biblical figures and royals are also encountered. Next to our Hannibal, for instance, other murals are known showing the likes of Scipio and Caesar, but also Artemis, Achilles, Pomona, Flora and Ceres. He also shows a mural of 5 x 13 tiles, depicting the count of Buren in a harness, with foliate growth flanking the central figure comparable to the ones we find on our current mural. (see image 7)
- Museum Rotterdam, inventarisnr. 5032, for a fragment of 4 x 4 tiles, bearing strong similarities to our current mural. (see image 8) (link)
- Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, for a full mural of 45 tiles (3 x 15) showing Hannibal (link) and his counterpart Scipio (link). (see images 9 and 10)
- Huis Maarten van Rossum, Stadskasteel Zaltbommel, for a remaining in situ fireplace depicting King David and King Solomon. (see images 11 and 12) (link)
