Weight: 6 g
Dimensions: Length 10.6 cm

The Siberian Yakut shamans, renowned for their metal smelting and smithing skills, were one of Russia's most prominent indigenous groups, recognized by their Evenki neighbors. Their ritual garments and regalia, intricately adorned with ivory, wood, and rare metals, embodied mystical power and bolstered the authority of both Yakut and Evenki shamans, safeguarding their journeys to the spirit world. These shamans also wore coats made from cured wild reindeer skin, with metal ornaments serving as protective armor against evil spirits. Metal masks, like the one in this lot, were believed to possess the souls of the shaman's ancestors and guardian spirits, offering apotropaic protection.

Siberia's extreme climate, inhospitable to many, was home to these shamans, who communicated with spirits to ensure success in hunting, healing, and divination. Highly respected within their communities, they were honored with the best food and given a place of prestige in the household. For performing important rituals, they were often compensated with one to four reindeer by wealthier families.
