Provenance: From the collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, by family repute acquired in 2004 from Daniel Milano, Paris. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Significant signs of weathering and erosion, small nicks, few tiny chips and losses. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Dimensions: Height 20.5 cm

Similar carvings have been discovered in the richly adorned tombs of ancient China, dating back to the late fourth and third millennia BC, shedding light on the cultural significance of jade as prestigious burial gifts or valued possessions of the deceased. The reverence for these jade objects persisted into the modern era, with collectors ranging from scholars to emperors treasuring them as decorative artifacts, objects of contemplation, and even repurposing them with copper liners for use as flower vases.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Liangzhu culture jade seven-tiered cong, 19.5 cm high, dated 3200-2200 BC, in the Musée Guimet, accession number MG 18341.
