A LARGE GREEN AND RUSSET JADE CEREMONIAL AXE, SHANG DYNASTY, ERLITOU PERIOD

China, ca. 1900-1600 BC. Of trapezoidal form with a straight upper edge and beveled lower edge, drilled with seven apertures along the upper edge and a five-notched flange along the shorter ends. Each side is neatly incised with geometric patterns. The opaque stone is of a mottled green tone with patches of russet, icy veins, pale clouds, and dark specks.

Provenance: Old private collection of the Conte Cattani family. Galleria La Balaustra Antichita, Bologna, Italy, acquired from the above before 1998. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above in 1998. A copy of an original expertise written and signed by Giuliana Zanetti of La Balaustra Antichita, dated 10 September 1998, and confirming the dating and provenance above, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, signs of weathering and erosions, encrustations, small nicks, and minor chips, some of which have smoothened over time. The jade with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

Compare with a closely related jade axe published 1980 in ‘Treasures from the bronze age of China’, Metropolitan Museum, New York, exhibition catalogue number 3. Note the similar color of the stone and the closely related incision work.
