A SHADOW AGATE ‘PAINTING SCHOLAR’ SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY

China, 1750-1850. Well hollowed, of rounded rectangular form rising from a thick oval foot to a broad cylindrical neck. One side is subtly carved using the inclusions of the stone to depict a scholar wearing long robes and an official’s hat slightly hunched over his ink-splash painting, one natural fissure embellished with a neatly incised leafy branch. The translucent stone of a mottled honey-yellow tone with patches of caramel-brown.

Provenance: From a private collection in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The base with an old inventory label, ‘48’.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections including fissures and inclusions. Minuscule nicks to the rim, one tiny nick to the foot.

Stopper: Jadeite
Weight: 93.6 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 75 mm. Diameter neck 25 mm and mouth 10 mm.

Expert’s note:
Shadow agate snuff bottles are characterized by motifs that leave room for interpretation by the observer. Here too, the nature of the figure is ambiguous and repeated viewings leave new impressions and perspectives. Shadow agate bottles depicting scholars or immortals commonly require more obvious carving and the present bottle, where the lapidary has relied almost entirely on the inclusions to ‘paint’ his artist, must be considered highly accomplished (or perhaps ‘lucky’) and rare.
