A GILT-DECORATED AND RETICULATED SOAPSTONE SNUFF BOTTLE, MID-QING DYNASTY

China, 1750-1850. Superbly carved in layers of relief, delicately reticulated, with precise incision work and finely gilt highlights. The flattened ovoid body supported on a stepped waisted foot and rising to a short neck with the original stopper surmounted by two lions. The body carved with overlapping, flowering prunus branches partly obscuring the reticulated panel.

Finely incised and gilded throughout, the piece features wave and foliage patterns on the body, complemented by line and spiral bands around the neck.

Provenance: Chris Sheffield Ltd., London, United Kingdom. A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above. Chris Sheffield has been active in the antique trade since 1980, specializing in Asian art. He enjoyed many years of success at London's Portobello Road antiques market and has served as an advisor to auctioneers, cataloged single-owner collections, and regularly exhibits at fairs in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, natural flaws, some rubbing to gilt, and microscopic nicks. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Literature comparison:
This jewel of a bottle is part of a group that are related in terms of their striking reticulation and inner chamber, yet all exhibit details of carving that are individualistic. One example dated 1750-1820 is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number C.1719-1910, while two others with similar floral decoration, dated to the 19th century, are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession numbers 27.131.11 and -.12.
