A GREEN AND GREY JADE FIGURE OF AN ELEPHANT, LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

China. Carved from a large pebble, the pachyderm lies with its front feet extending outward and its back feet tucked underneath, its tail flicks up towards its head which is turned sharply to the right, the trunk elegantly curved toward the other direction. Masterfully carved, the elephant’s almond-shaped eyes, large leaf-like ears, and wrinkled skin excellently detailed with varied and precise incision work. The opaque stone is of a pale greenish tone with gray and brown patches, russet and icy veins, and cloudy inclusions.

Provenance: United States trade. Acquired from a noted private estate in North America.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few nicks and light surface scratches, the stone with natural fissures, some of which may develop into small hairlines over time.

Weight: 1,357 g
Dimensions: Length 12.3 cm

The elephant is an auspicious symbol which is used in numerous rebuses to convey peace, prosperity, and good fortune. In Buddhism, elephants are regarded as one of the Seven Treasures and in a broader context are seen as symbols of strength, wisdom, and power.
