拍品描述
A CELADON AND RUSSET JADE ‘MYTHICAL BEAST’ PENDANT, MING DYNASTY

China, 1368-1644. The beast finely carved seated in a relaxed pose with one hindleg folded in and the other bent at the knee, holding a club in the right paw. The spine is well articulated, and the gently protruding belly is carved with a small navel. The face neatly detailed with round eyes, a broad flat snout, a long scrolling beard, and two gently curled horns to the back, the mouth agape revealing teeth and sharp fangs.

Pierced from the nape down to the underside for suspension as a pendant. The stone of a deep russet and celadon tone with dark brown veins and inclusions.

Provenance: From an English private collection.
Condition: Old wear, few nicks and minor nibbles. The proper left hand with a larger loss, smoothened over time. The stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks over time.

Weight: 35.2 g
Dimensions: Height 5.2 cm

Expert’s note:
The present lot is rare and unusual in its combination of typically leonine features and a relaxed, hunched pose more commonly found in human figures with an enigmatic attribute to match. Compare with a related jade figure described as a horned demon, Song dynasty or earlier, illustrated by Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, London, 1975, no. 94. A further example, dated 3rd-6th century is illustrated by R. Y. Lefebvre d'Argencé, Chinese Jades in the Avery Brundage Collection, San Francisco, 1977, pp. 68-69, pl. 27. Compare also with another related jade figure, Ming dynasty, illustrated by Gerard Tsang, Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 162, no. 146.
