A GILT-COPPER REPOUSSé LINGA COVER WITH THE FACE OF SHIVA, MALLA PERIOD, NEPAL, 15TH-16TH CENTURY

Expert’s note:
In Nepal, Hindus revere Shiva in many forms, each embodying distinct spiritual and cultural nuances. This exquisite repoussé sculpture showcases Shiva with bow-shaped eyes, including his iconic vertical third eye, and softly pursed lips - features that exemplify the poetic beauty of the Malla period. His elaborately adorned appearance includes a floral diadem securing his neatly arranged dreadlocks, powerful snake-shaped earrings coiled at his ears, and a finely detailed beaded and foliate necklace, all reflecting the opulent fashion and artistic sophistication of the Malla era.

Finely worked, the face shows a benevolent expression marked by sinuously lidded eyes, elegantly arched brows, well-worn urna, and bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile. The deity is richly adorned with ornate jewelry such as serpent earrings and a foliate tiara. His curled hair is neatly incised and arranged in an elaborate chignon.

Provenance: French trade.
Condition: Very good condition with some wear, predominantly from centuries of worship within the culture, with minor rubbing to gilding and light dents.

Weight: 264 g
Dimensions: Height 19.5 cm

Metal linga covers (kosha; literally, "sheath") have played a part in the worship of the Hindu deity Shiva since antiquity. The present lot was likely a part of an ekhamukhalinga (five-faced linga), which was fitted with the five faces of Shiva. The four faces of Shiva depicted along the side of the linga covers evoke different aspects of the deity, each pointing toward a cardinal direction. The fifth face is understood rather than represented and thought to be facing skyward.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related Nepalese gilt-copper repoussé linga cover with the face of Shiva, 23.5 cm high, dated c. 16th century, formerly in the Stella Kramrisch Collection and now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession number 1994-148-599.
