拍品描述
AN INLAID GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF WHITE TARA, NEPAL, 19TH CENTURY

Finely cast, the seven-eyed Tara sits in padmasana on a lotus pedestal with a delicately beaded upper rim. Her upturned soles and palms feature additional eyes, with her right hand lowered in varada mudra and her left raised in vitarka mudra, each holding a lotus stem blooming at the shoulders. She wears a dhoti with exquisitely carved folds gathered below her feet, while her paneled crown, necklaces, and arm bands are richly inlaid with turquoise.

Her serene face with downcast eyes, sinuous brows flanking a central urna, and pendulous lobes, her hair neatly arranged in a high chignon and covered with blue pigment.

The base retains its original sealing which is neatly engraved with a double vajra.

Provenance: From a French private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear and expected casting irregularities, rubbing, small nicks, some losses to the inlays and some possibly replaced, a small fatigue crack to the back. Remnants of ancient pigments as well as lacquer gilding to the face.

Weight: 467.7 g
Dimensions: Height 11.1 cm

Following Nepalese and Tibetan convention, Tara has the status and ranking of an enlightened buddha yet appearing in the guise of a female bodhisattva, embodied as a graceful, beautiful young woman. Here, Tara is depicted in her principal and minor form with one face, two arms and hands. She is seated on a throne made of finely curled lotus petals, alluding to the belief that the goddess emerged from a lotus bud rising from a lake of tears shed for the suffering of sentient beings by the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, her face embodying the delicacy of a million lotus blossoms (see Glenn Mullin, Mystical Verses of a Dalai Lama, New Delhi, 2003, page 57).

Literature comparison:
Compare a related gilt bronze figure of Tara, dated c. 1700-1800, 7.5 cm high, in the Rijksmuseum, object number AK-MAK-197.
