A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF THE ARHAT PANTHAKA, TIBET, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

Published: Ursula Toyka-Fuong, Ikonographie und Symbolik des Tibetischen Buddhismus: Die Kultplastiken der Sammlung Ernst Senner, Wiesbaden, 1987, p. 16-17, no. C 2.

Finely cast, seated in lalitasana on a two-layered cushion covered by a silk rug, the luohan holds his left hand in gyan mudra and a sutra (or book) in his right, leaning forward with the head slightly tilted, wearing voluminous monastic robes comprised of a chos-gos covering a phod-ka. He shows a consternate expression with almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, red-lacquered bow-shaped lips and short hair with a pronounced hairline and remnants of black lacquer.

The base is sealed and engraved with a double vajra.

Inscriptions: The back of the cushion and the base each incised with the number ’13’, indicating the present figure was the thirteenth in a set of sixteen or eighteen Arhats and identifying him as the arhat Panthaka.

Provenance From the private collection of Dr. Ernst Senner, acquired between 1950 and 1987, thence by descent. The base with two old labels, one inscribed ‘Gopaka BT28, Tibet, um 1700’, and inscribed ‘BT28’.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, small nicks, minor rubbing to the gilt, and minuscule dents.

Weight: 526.5 g
Dimensions: Height 11 cm

Panthaka is the elder brother of Chulapanthaka and is the thirteenth of the sixteen Arhats. He is typically depicted holding a book in his right hand while showing the gesture of teaching. An accomplished scholar, arhat Panthaka was drawn to Buddhism by the philosophy of interdependent origination, which teaches that all phenomena, both inner and outer, arise through the joint effect of their own particular causes and conditions. Through his study and meditation Panthaka attained the level of arhat, and taught the Dharma to a multitude of students.
