A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF SARVABUDDHADAKINI, TIBET, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Published: Ursula Toyka-Fuong, Ikonographie und Symbolik des Tibetischen Buddhismus: Die Kultplastiken der Sammlung Ernst Senner, Wiesbaden, 1987, p. 126-127, no. C 50.

The wrathful deity finely cast standing in alidhasana, her right hand holding the kartika, the left raised and clasped around a blood-filled kapala which she lowers to her mouth. Clad in a sheer dhoti and richly adorned with beaded jewelry as well as a detachable mundamala, tiara, kamarband, and khatvanga, all meticulously worked in copper repoussé.

The face with finely painted features and a fierce expression marked by bulging eyes and bared teeth, flanked by pendulous lobes suspending earrings inlaid with pink gemstones. Her neatly incised hair falls elegantly down her back, while the head crowned by a skull tiara decorated with turquoise inlaid foliate embellishments.

Provenance: From the private collection of Dr. Ernst Senner, acquired between 1950 and 1987, thence by descent in the family.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities. Small nicks, tiny losses, flaking to gilt and pigment, some warping, few cracks and tiny fissures.

Weight: 171.2 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 13.7 cm (excl. stand), 16.8 cm (incl. stand)

With an associated wood stand. (2)

Her name means 'Dakini of All Buddhas' and she represents Wisdom. Dakinis are female spirits who serve as guide and muse to tantric practitioners. She is an important goddess and appears often as tutelary deity on paintings, while bronze images of Sarvabuddhadakini are considerably rarer.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related gilt-bronze figure of Vajrayogini in the Capital Museum, Beijing, illustrated on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 59853.

Auction result comparison:

Description: A gilt-bronze figure of Sarvabuddhadakini, Tibeto-Chinese, 18th century
