A GILT BRONZE ‘TIGER’ BRUSH REST, HAN DYNASTY

China, 206 BC-220 AD. Finely cast crouching, the feline with its head sharply turned to the back, the face with large eyes, a pinched nose, and a grinning mouth revealing sharp fangs. The back elegantly arched and the body terminating in a long, coiled tail.

Provenance: From a private estate in France.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, weathering, and corrosion. Scratches, nicks, minor dents. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown patina with areas of malachite encrustation.

Dimensions: Length 8.3 cm

Compare a closely related gilt bronze figure of a tiger, also dated to the Han dynasty, in the Guanfu Museum, Beijing. Compare a closely related gilt bronze figure of a fantastic lion, also dated to the Han dynasty, 4.6 cm long, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1930.306.
