A FINE AND UNUSUAL BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, CHINA, 17TH CENTURY

Cast seated on a stump overgrown with meandering vines, one leg crossed over the other, dressed in voluminous robes with a ruyi-head collar and long billowing sleeves, pooling in thick folds to the feet. The deity with a compassionate expression well detailed with heavy-lidded eyes centered by a raised circular urna above gently partly lips, the neatly incised hair combed back and surmounted by a floral headdress.

Provenance: From an old private collection in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, assembled during the 1970s and 1980s and thence by descent.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Casting irregularities, few nicks, scratches, and pits. Some losses to the headdress. The attribute lost. The bronze with a naturally grown, dark patina.

Weight: 3,164 g
Dimensions: Height 26.3 cm

Expert’s note: In many examples, Guanyin is portrayed with a calm, idealized face. In contrast, the head of Guanyin in this lot is distinctly individualized—a confident beauty with a high forehead, pert nose, and numerous hairpins as well as a beaded clasp in her late Ming-style coiffure. For jade examples of similar coiffures, see James Watt's Chinese Jades Han to Ch'ing (1980, cat. no. 192, p. 198; cat. no. 193, signed by Lu Zigang, p. 199). This seated Guanyin bears more resemblance to rare, portrait-like male figures from the secular realm, such as the seated scholar-official inscribed with Wanli cyclical dates from the Doris Duke Collection (Christie's New York, sale 1408, 21 September 2004, lot 125, 22.9 cm high). The posture of the figure with one leg crossed over the other has been associated with Guanyin since the Five Dynasties. This pose, with variations, continued into the seventeenth century, notably seen in porcelain and bronze.
