A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF WHITE TARA, DOLONNOR, INNER MONGOLIA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Published: Ursula Toyka-Fuong, Ikonographie und Symbolik des Tibetischen Buddhismus: Die Kultplastiken der Sammlung Ernst Senner, Wiesbaden, 1987, p. 204-205, no. C 82.

Finely cast, the seven-eyed Tara seated in padmasana on a double-lotus base with beaded upper rim, her right hand lowered in varada mudra and her left held at the chest in vitarka mudra, her soles and palms cast with eyes painted white with blue irises, black pupils, and touches of red at the tips.

The goddess wearing a loose-fitting dhoti gracefully falling in neatly carved folds gathered at the top of the base and richly adorned with elegant beaded jewelry, her paneled tiara and earrings inlaid with rubies, turquoises, and rock crystal. Her serene face with sinuously lidded eyes below high arched brows as well as slender bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile. Her blue hair is arranged in a high chignon topped by a jewel.

Provenance: From the private collection of Dr. Ernst Senner, acquired between 1950 and 1987, thence by descent. The interior inscribed with an old inventory number ‘BT82’ and with an old label inscribed ‘C 82 Sita Tara 19 Jh.’
Condition: Good condition with wear, casting flaws, expected losses to inlays with a single glass replacement, minor rubbing to the gilding, small dents, minute nicks, some touchups, some warping. The base unsealed. Overall displaying remarkably well.

Weight: 887 g
Dimensions: Height 27.4 cm

The base and lower body of the sculpture are crafted from copper alloy using the repoussé technique, involving intricate chasing and embossing to create detailed surface designs. The head and torso are produced through the hollow-casting process, specifically using the lost wax method, which allows for precisely executed features. Furthermore, the paneled tiara and earrings are individually cast and meticulously affixed to the head, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in their application.
