A BLACK STONE STELE OF VISHNU, PALA PERIOD

Bengal, 12th-13th century. Finely and deeply carved, the four-armed deity stands on a lotus pedestal. He holds a gada (mace) in his upper right hand and forms the varada mudra with his lower right. In his upper left, he holds a cakra (disk), symbolizing absolute completeness, and a sankha (conch) in his lower left. His face, with heavy-lidded eyes beneath gently arched brows and slender lips forming a calm smile, is surmounted by a tall conical headdress and backed by a halo.

Bengal art of the 12th century and beyond, particularly during the Pala-Sena period, is known for its significant contributions to the development of Indian culture. The region was under the rule of the Pala dynasty (8th to 12th century) and later the Sena dynasty, both of which were instrumental in fostering a rich artistic and cultural heritage.

His grandfather Joseph Maximilian Hartl (d. 1957), German Consul in China, started a business selling art and antiques in Fuzhou in 1932.
