A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, CIRCA 12TH-14TH CENTURY

India, Himachal Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh. Expertly cast seated in lalitasana atop a circular dais on a stepped, waisted pedestal, with his vahana, the rat, crawling beneath his pendent right foot. In his primary hands, he holds a broken tusk and a bowl of sweets, sampling them with his trunk, while his secondary hands hold a goad and noose. Clad in a short dhoti, he is richly adorned with jewelry and a sacred thread across his prominent belly. His face and body are finely detailed with silver inlay, all framed by a conjoined nimbus topped with a tiered finial.

Provenance: Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard, Paris, 1995. A private collection in France, acquired from the above. A copy of an expertise written and signed by Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard, dated 17 February 1995, erroneously dating the present lot to the 17th century, accompanies this lot.
Condition: Good condition with casting flaws and extensive wear, predominantly from centuries of worship. Tiny nicks, small dents, minor losses, the base slightly warped. The bronze with a smooth, naturally grown, dark patina.

Weight: 319.3 g
Dimensions: Height 10.5 cm

Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is a widely cherished deity in the Hindu pantheon. He is worshipped throughout India at the beginning of journeys or new endeavors. As such, he is often placed at thresholds or entries where he is traditionally offered sweets, fruits, coins, flowers, and freshly cut grass. Renowned for his powers to remove obstacles, he also aids in areas of education, knowledge and wisdom, literature and fine arts. This beautiful shrine with Ganesha seated at the center depicts the god in all his splendor, with a full rounded belly and long trunk dipping into a bowl of sweets. Cast in deep relief and gently worn from years of rubbing, this work is a perfect portable shrine to this important deity.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related brass figure of Ganesha from Himachal Pradesh, dated to the early 13th century, but lacking the silver inlays, 13.5 cm high, illustrated by M. Postel, A. Neven, and K. Mankodi, Antiquities of Himachal, 1985, fig. 190. Compare a related copper Ganesha shrine from Central India, dated to the 15th century, also lacking the silver inlays, 12.1 cm high, in the Brooklyn Museum, accession number 81.197.1.
