A HEAVYLY CAST BRONZE FIGURE OF RADHA, 16TH-17TH CENTURY

India, Orissa or Bengal. Standing in samabhanga on a plain square base with the elbows bent and arms thrust forward with the hands half-closed. Wearing a simple dhoti tied at the waist and falling in a single fold down the center of the legs. Her face with almond-shaped eyes, gently arched brows, and slender lips forming a subtle smile, the ears and one nostril pierced with small apertures for jewelry. The neat hairline above the forehead centered by single tuft at the front and a braided shikha flowing down the back.

Provenance: From a German private collection, acquired from the 1960s onwards, and thence by descent.
Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and some casting irregularities, few small nicks, remnants of varnish mostly to the shikha, the bronze covered in a fine, naturally grown, dark patina with small specks of malachite and cuprite encrustation.
