拍品描述
A LARGE ‘HANUMAN’ BRONZE BELL, GHANTI

North India, second half of the 19th century. Heavily cast, the domed bell with a flared rim rising to a lotus-petaled circular dais on which Hanuman stands, dressed in a langot (loincloth) and crowned with a tiered mukuta. The body of the bell is richly engraved with additional figures and an elephant, all amid various foliate motifs.

Provenance: French trade.
Condition: Excellent condition with some old wear, traces of usage, and casting flaws. The bronze with a naturally grown dark patina overall.

Weight: 2,943 g
Dimensions: Height 31.4 cm

The handle of this bell consists of a finely wrought figure of Hanuman, the famous monkey general who, in Hindu mythology, led the army that helped Rama rescue his wife, Sita, from Ravana. Priests use ghanti of different sizes to worship and pay homage to a god. This worship may occur in a temple or privately at home before the household shrine.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related brass bell, also dated to the second half of the 19th century, 30.5 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 89.4.154.
