A PICCHVAI DEPICTING KRISHNA AND RADHA ON A SWING, 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Northern India, Rajasthan. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on cloth. Blue-skinned Krishna gazes into Radha's eyes as they both grip the ropes of a swing hanging from a tall tree. Radha wears a pink translucent robe and veil, while Krishna is dressed in a flowing yellow robe with a golden crown adorned with a peacock feather. Their robes billow in the wind as female attendants look on in awe. The scene is set in a lush grove with towering trees, a meandering river, and a white palace in the distance.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a local estate sale in the Northwest of France.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and minuscule creasing.

Dimensions: Image size 73 x 98 cm, size incl. frame 106 x 81.5 cm

Mounted and framed behind glass. (2)

The intense gaze between Krishna and Radha symbolizes their deep desire to unite as one. The artist emphasizes the power of this gaze through the expressions of the female onlookers, who watch the couple with awe and wonder, captivated by this display of love. The stillness of the onlookers contrasts beautifully with the movement of the swing and the flowing garments of the lovers. For a similar depiction of Krishna and Radha on a swing, see a miniature dated circa 1820 at Christie’s New York, 20 March 2012, lot 201.

Picchvai refers to large cloth paintings used as backdrops for Lord Krishna's idols in temples, especially at the renowned Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. This art form dates back to the 17th century when the deity of Shrinathji, a manifestation of Lord Krishna, was first enshrined there.
