AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF A PRINCE PAUSING AT A WELL, 18TH CENTURY

Northern India, c. 1750. Opaque pigments and gold on paper. Skillfully painted with a group of women busy at work drawing water, as they are interrupted by a nobleman requesting water astride his white caparisoned mare, finely dressed in a diaphanous robe and adorned with pearls. Set within a hilly landscape and enclosed within a plain red border.

Provenance: His Exalted Highness, the Nizam of Hyderabad, Osman Ali Khan (1886-1967), personally gifted to Dr. Mallanah Shrinagesh, Hyderabad, India. Thence by descent to Dr. Shrinagesh’s daughter Shakuntala Hartog (1924-2006). Thence by descent to her widower Rudolf Hartog (1924-2018). Thence by descent in the family to the last owner. Dr. Mallanah Shrinagesh was the personal physician to H.E.H. Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII, the last Nizam of the Princely State of Hyderabad, the largest state in the British Indian Empire, who reigned from 1911 to 1948. The paintings were a personal gift by the Nizam to Shrinagesh, given during the 1930s as compensation for his work. They decorated the walls of the doctor’s apartment in the court at Hyderabad. His daughter Shakuntala inherited the pieces and brought them with her when she moved with her husband Rudolf Hartog to Germany. Shakuntala and Rudolf Hartog both wrote several books about India, published in Germany.

Dimensions: Image size 26.1 x 17.4 cm, Size incl. frame 37.8 x 30.5 cm

The present work depicts a group of eager maidens serving water to a young equestrian nobleman. The bright hues lend an eye-popping palette, while the women’s water pots, along with the prince’s personal ornaments, are all heightened with gold. The artist uses gentle shading, delineating the soft curves of the figures and the meandering tree, which ties together a simple and pleasing composition.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related miniature depicting Akbar at a village well, attributed to Mola Ram and dated 1770, in the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, accession number 1998.42.91.
