A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, SOUTH DECCAN, 9TH CENTURY

India. The four-armed deity seated in lalitasana on a mound supported on a flat circular base, his four radiating arms hold his various attributes like the modakpatra, conch, noose, and ankusha. Dressed in a short dhoti, secured by a snake wrapped around his waist, the elephant-headed deity with a long trunk, large ears, and a conical crown. His rat vahana peers its head curiously from between the deity’s legs as it hurriedly eats a modak.

Provenance: From a noted private collection in Chicago, Illinois, United States, and thence by descent within the family.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, losses, rubbing, signs of weathering and erosion, small dents, scratches, minor warping . The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with extensive malachite encrustations.

Compare a closely related bronze figure of a Dancing Ganesha, with similar mandorla, 13.5 cm high, dated first half of the 9th century, South Deccan, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession number EA2013.82. Compare also a related small copper alloy figure of Ganesha, 7 cm high, dated circa 10th century, West Bengal, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number AC1995.192.4.
