A FINE BRONZE FIGURE OF GWANEUM (AVALOKITESHVARA), LATE JOSEON DYNASTY

Korea, 19th century. Cast standing in a slightly sway-backed posture atop a base of thrashing waves, the right hand in abhaya mudra and the left holding a gilt wind instrument. The deity is dressed in a sash-tied dhoti, adorned with a flowing shawl, foliate jewelry, and a long beaded necklace featuring circular flowerheads.

The face with a serene expression, heavy-lidded eyes, and slender lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by long pendulous lobes suspending floral earrings, the neatly incised hair falling elegantly in strands over the shoulders and secured by a paneled tiara.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired at a local estate sale.
Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and some casting irregularities, few nicks, light scratches, small losses.

Weight: 2,919 g
Dimensions: Height 39 cm

Elegantly adorned in the regal attire of an ancient Indian prince, this bronze figure represents a bodhisattva, a compassionate being who has attained enlightenment but has postponed entering Nirvana to help others achieve the same. Bodhisattvas are typically dressed in ornamental scarves, rich silk brocade dhotis, and adorned with an abundance of jewelry, including necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and anklets. This figure’s beaded necklace drapes from the neck to the chest, passes through a medallion at the waist, and cascades to the knees in two broad loops before returning to the back.
