拍品描述
A RARE BRONZE ELEPHANT BELL, ANGKOR PERIOD

Khmer Empire, 12th century. Finely cast, of compressed globular form with two disk-shaped ridges decorated with vertical grooves and minute flames around the waisted center and pierced opening cast with beaded and foliate designs, all below the large ring finial encircled by raised lotus petals.

Provenance: From a German private estate.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with expected old wear, signs of weathering and erosion, soil encrustations, losses, casting flaws, scratches. Minor old repairs and touchups. The bronze is covered in a rich, naturally grown patina with extensive malachite encrustations.

Weight: 1,375 g (excl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 19 cm (excl. stand), 23.5 cm (incl. stand)

Elephant bells such as the present lot hung from the elephant’s saddle or around the neck, ringing as the animal moved. The prominent ridges projecting from the surface serve to keep the main body of the bell from touching the elephant’s skin thereby dulling its tone.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze elephant bell, dated to the 12th century, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number IS.178-1991.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 17 September 2003, lot 44
Price: USD 9,560 or approx. EUR 15,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: An unusual bronze bell, Khmer, Angkor period, 12th/13th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and manner of casting, albeit with less elaborate decoration than the present lot.
