拍品描述
A SANDSTONE LINGAM AND YONI, PRE-ANGKOR PERIOD

Mekong Delta, 6th-7th century. Carved from a single block of beige sandstone, the tall domed lingam emerges from a square yoni, which features a side spout for unguents to flow off.

Provenance: French trade, acquired from a local private estate sale.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, structural fissures, minor losses, chips, nicks, scratches.

Dimensions: Height 24 cm, Length 58 cm

The lingam and yoni (or snanadroni) are aniconic symbols of Shiva and Uma, representing the male and female reproductive organs. In Hinduism, their union symbolizes cosmic balance and the generative force of the universe, embodied in Shiva. In Khmer culture, some kings identified with Shiva, placing a lingam atop their most important temples as a key element of royal symbolism.
