拍品描述
A LARGE WOOD STATUE OF BUDDHA, BURMA, LATE 18TH CENTURY

Carved in samabhanga, The Buddha stands in voluminous robes, his face exuding a powerful expression with heavy-lidded downcast eyes and a gentle smile. The hair is elegantly piled atop a domed ushnisha, culminating in a flame finial. Despite significant weathering, this inspiring piece – probably once part of a major structure - remains a fine example of the ancient art of the Shan people in Burma. The Shan, known for their distinctive school of thought, emphasize serenity and spiritual depth in their sculptural work. Their artistic tradition reflects a deep reverence for Buddhist principles, often characterized by calm, meditative expressions and graceful forms, as seen in this piece.

Provenance: From the private collection of Olivier Maréchal, Belgium, acquired in Burma in 2011. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Olivier Maréchal, dated 25 July 2024, confirming the above, accompanies this lot. Olivier Maréchal (b. 1973) is a noted Belgian collector and dealer specializing in the arts of India, Vietnam, and Thailand. He began his career in the mid-1990s, learning from his father who helped him with his first purchases. He later managed Surya Gallery in Brussels, Belgium.
Condition: Extensive wear, obvious losses, erosion and weathering, natural imperfections, old repairs.

Dimensions: Height 160 cm (excl. stand) and 186 cm (incl. stand)

With a fitted, modern metal stand. (2)
