A RARE PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A GUARDIAN LION, TANG DYNASTY

Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 14 June 2004, based on sample number C104m6, sets the firing date of three samples taken between 900 and 1500 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.

China, 618-907. Crisply modeled with the muscular contours of the beast’s body finely rendered. The ferocious lion seated on its haunches, its mouth open in a vicious snarl with flared nostrils, pricked ears, and bulging round eyes. The feet with finely detailed claws and toes, the long tail flicked upwards reminiscent of a naga hood.

Provenance: Allen’s Antiques, Auckland, New Zealand, 2006. The collection of Bryan Stanton, acquired from the above. A copy of an expertise written and signed by Anthony J. Allen of Allen’s Antiques, dated 5 September 2006, confirming the dating above, and referencing the Oxford Authentication report, accompanies this lot. Anthony John Allen is a scholar, author, and dealer of Chinese works of art based in New Zealand. He founded Allen’s Antiques in 2002 and has since published several reference books on Chinese and East Asian art, most notably a series of collector’s guides.
Published: Anthony J. Allen, Allen’s Authentication of Ancient Chinese Ceramics, 2006, illustrated on the cover.
Condition: Superb condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear with signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, scratches, minor losses, chips, few structural cracks, remnants of pigment, minuscule drilled holes from sample-taking. Typically, Tang dynasty figures show signs of old repairs, but after a thorough examination under strong blue light, none were found on this piece. However, perfect condition can never be guaranteed with ancient terracotta statues.

Weight: 5.5 kg
Dimensions: Height 37.6 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related pottery beast excavated from the tomb of Li Zhen (617-665), censor of the Zizhou prefecture, and now in the Jiaxing Museum. Compare also the pair of pottery beasts from Dunhuang Mogao Cave 320 now in the State Hermitage Museum, brought to St. Petersburg in 1915 by the second Russian Turkestan Expedition led by Sergei Feodorovitch Oldenburg.
