A PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A COURT LADY, TANG DYNASTY

Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 29 August 1997, based on sample number C97g11, sets the firing date of two samples taken at between 900 and 1500 years ago. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.

China, 618-907. Elegantly modeled standing in graceful contrapposto, dressed in long robes well detailed with finely carved folds and secured by a black belt at the waist. The face neatly painted with blushed cheeks, pursed lips, and gentle eyes. The dark hair arranged in an elaborate coiffure.

Provenance: A private collection in the United Kingdom. Berwald Oriental Art, London, 2000. A private collection in the United States, acquired from the above. Two old labels to base, one from Berwald Oriental Art and the other inscribed ‘Tang 618-906’. A copy of the original invoice from Berwald Oriental Art, dated 17 June 2000, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price of GBP 8,500 or EUR 23,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. John Berwald has been dealing in Chinese ceramics for over thirty years, having had galleries in both London and New York. He established Berwald Oriental Art in 1986, opening his first gallery on Kensington Church Street a few years later. Specializing in Chinese ceramics, sculpture, and works of art from the Han through to the Qing dynasty, Berwald has helped to form some of the world’s finest collections of Chinese art.
Condition: Very good condition overall, commensurate with age. Wear, signs of weathering and erosion, losses and fading to pigments. Minor chips, cracks, and losses. Soil encrustations. Drilled holes from sample taking. Minor touchups and small old repairs here and there, all exactly as expected from authentic Tang dynasty excavations.

Weight: 1,270.5 g
Dimensions: Height 32.5 cm

This somewhat portly female figure represents the ideal of beauty during the Tang dynasty, which was often associated with Yang Guifei, one of China's great beauties and the influential concubine of the Tang emperor Xuangzong (r. 712-756), reflecting the increasingly sedentary and luxurious lifestyle of the Tang elites. In the Tang period, it was common to beautify female faces with extensive make-up. Rouged cheeks and lips were in vogue at the time. Blush was often applied to the cheeks, reaching the eyelids, to resemble the complexion tone achieved by drinking wine, which was thought to imbue women with greater grace.
