A SMALL PAINTED POTTERY JAR, MAJIAYAO CULTURE

China, Banshan-Machang type, 2500-2000 BC. Well potted with rounded shoulders, surmounted by a cylindrical neck, applied with two loop handles. The exterior freely painted with lozenge diaper divided into panels by vertical serrated strips. Dark brown and Bordeaux-red pigments.

Provenance: Dutch trade.
Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Wear, firing flaws, few nicks, light scratches, minuscule flaking, encrustations.

Weight: 298 g
Dimensions: Height 11 cm, Diameter 12.5 cm

This pottery jar exemplifies the distinctive characteristics of the Majiayao culture, a notable Neolithic civilization situated predominantly in the upper Yellow River region, China.
