A HENAN RUSSET-SPLASHED BLACK-GLAZED BOWL, SONG DYNASTY

Exhibited:
Bluett & Sons, Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, London, June 1972, no. 60.
Early Oriental Ceramics, MacRobert Centre, University of Stirling, 5-25 July 1973, no. 30 (copies from the relevant pages of the exhibition catalogue and an old photograph of the present lot in the exhibition accompany this lot).

China, 960-1234. Well potted with deep rounded sides supported on a thick short foot and covered overall in a lustrous black glaze decorated with five russet splashes radiating from the incurving rim, the glaze falling short of the neatly knife-pared foot, revealing the buff-colored body.

Provenance: Bluett & Sons, London, 1972. Collection of Dr. Kenneth Lawley, acquired from the above at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair. A private collection in the Scottish Borders, United Kingdom, acquired from the above on 9 February 2005. The exterior with remnants of the old exhibition label, ‘M[acRobert] Centr[e]’, and an old Bluett label. Copies of an invoice from Bluett & Sons, dated 14 June 1972, confirming the dating above and stating a purchase price of GBP 325 or approx. EUR 6,600 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), a letter written and signed by Dr. Kenneth Lawley dated 16 January 2005, and an invoice from Dr. Lawley dated 9 February 2005, accompany this lot. Dr. Kenneth P. Lawley (1937-2023) was a chemical physicist in The School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. His collection started in the early 1960s, and for the first twenty-five years of his collecting career Dr. Lawley made the majority of his purchases from the Davies Street gallery of Bluett and Sons. Working within a fairly small budget – Lawley had a small private income as well as his emoluments from the University of Edinburgh – he often sold pieces back to the firm to finance more expensive purchases.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, firing irregularities including small glaze recesses, few burst bubbles, some glaze lines, four large spur marks to the interior, scratches and flakes, and the foot with minor chips.
