A PAINTED GRAY POTTERY HORSE HEAD, HAN DYNASTY

China, 206 BC-220 AD. The hollow head sits on a heavy neck and is naturalistically crafted with prominent round eyes, rounded cheeks, mouth agape to reveal tongue and teeth, and flaring nostrils, the top of the head pierced with two apertures, and a sharp ridge indicates the mane. The gray pottery is covered with a dark red pigment with traces of black and white.

Provenance: The Property of a Lady and Gentleman in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, chips, encrustations, nicks, scratches, firing irregularities, all as expected from Han dynasty excavations.
