A COPPER-RED AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE ‘FIVE MONKEYS’ SNUFF BOTTLE

China, 1820-1870. Of elegant meiping form, supported by a flaring foot and topped with a domed, matching stopper, the exceptionally well-potted porcelain vessel is finely painted in copper-red and cobalt-blue to depict five monkeys resting on rockwork, with one perched on a pine tree branch, while the reverse shows three bats in flight.

Provenance: From the private collection of George Withers (1946-2023), a renowned antiques dealer based in Bath, England. Raised in Charfield, Gloucestershire, Withers purchased his first antique grandfather clock at just 14. He ran antiques stalls in London and Bath but was known for his reluctance to part with the treasures he acquired, amassing a vast and diverse personal collection spanning time and culture.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities including a minute firing crack running along the shoulder. The copper-red exhibits areas of green oxidation, reminiscent of Kangxi peachbloom glazes.

Stopper: Porcelain (matching)
Weight: 72.8 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 86 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 8 mm.

In Chinese culture, the symbolism of monkeys is generally positive, representing cleverness, agility, and resourcefulness. In ancient times, monkeys were also associated with nobility and high status because the Chinese word for "monkey" (hóu, 猴) is a homophone for "marquis" (hóu, 侯), a noble title. As such, monkeys often symbolize career success, promotions, and achieving high ranks. The number five has significance in Chinese culture as well, often symbolizing balance, harmony, and the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). While there isn't a specific cultural reference to five monkeys together, a group of five might evoke the idea of balance and harmony, with the clever, resourceful nature of the monkeys enhancing these themes.
