A RARE 'THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER' OVERLAY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, KANGXI MARK, 18TH CENTURY

Published: Chinese Snuff Bottles and Jade Carvings from the Douglas, Gnam and Other Collections, Chinese Porcelain Company, 1992, page 14, no. 18 (dated 1800-1880).

Expert’s note: A translucent emerald-green overlay on a café-au-lait ground was a favored glass combination during the mid-to-late Qing period. The overlay carving on the present lot is exceptionally elegant and refined, suggesting an earlier date. The artist paid meticulous attention to details like the bamboo nodes, rock crevices, and pine needles, all contributing to a masterfully balanced composition.

China, Beijing. Of flattened ovoid form, rising from an oval foot ring to a waisted neck with a tall rim. Finely carved through the outer, deep forest-green layer to the opaque caramel ground to depict the Three Friends of Winter, with verdant branches of pine towering above a prunus hedge and bamboo grove on either side, the landscape densely decorated with pierced rockwork.

The recessed base incised with a three-character mark Kangxi zhi.

Provenance: The Douglas Collection, United States. The Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, acquired from the above. Robert Hall, London, United Kingdom, 1994, acquired from the above. A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above and thence by descent. A copy of an invoice signed by Robert Hall, dated 24 March 1994, confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot. Robert Hall is one of the leading dealers of Chinese Snuff Bottles. He has played a vital role in the formation of many of the world's great collections, including the Mary and George Bloch Collection. His wide knowledge of the subject has enabled him to produce numerous publications and articles, such as his series Chinese Snuff Bottles I to XVI (1987-2011).
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities. One tiny nibble to the mouth and two minuscule nibbles to the foot ring.

Stopper: Glass
Weight: 71.1 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 75 mm. Diameter neck 11 mm and mouth 7 mm.

The 'Three Friends of Winter' motif is frequently used across all mediums in Chinese art. Comprised of pine, bamboo and prunus, this motif is emblematic of the Confucian virtues of fortitude and resilience. As the pine and bamboo are evergreen plants and the prunus, a plant that has lived for a long time, the three together are also an auspicious symbol of longevity.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related snuff bottle with the Three Friends of Winter, 1740-1840, 6.4 cm, illustrated by John Gilmore Ford, Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Edward Choate O’Dell Collection, The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, Baltimore, 1982, p. 59, no. 134. See Moss, Graham and Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle. The J & J Collection, no. 390 for a green glass on brown overlay bottle of similar form carved with a continuous design of the Three Friends of Winter.
