拍品描述
A ‘REALGAR’ SANDWICHED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1850

China. Of flattened ovoid form, rising from a slightly concave base to a waisted neck with a flat lip, the transparent glass body composed of two layers, with striations of brilliant orange and pale olive-green as well as splashes of red and orange imitating the mineral realgar.

Provenance: From a French private collection. The spoon inscribed with an inventory number, ‘88’.
Condition: Good condition with wear and manufacturing irregularities, including tiny pits and burst bubbles. The mouth chipped and the foot with microscopic nibbling.

Stopper: Jadeite
Weight: 70.6 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 69 mm. Diameter neck 18 mm and mouth 10 mm.

Expert’s note:
A natural evolution of the sandwiched effect is the addition of a second layer of coloring to the outer layer of glass, achieved by rolling on further fragments of color. This provides considerable extra decorative potential, since it allows for a second layer of pattern to act as a counterpoint to the sandwiched layer. In view of the appeal of this effect so clearly demonstrated here, it is perhaps surprising the technique was not employed more often. It occurs on the series of bottles of which this is a fine example, where realgar-glass is combined with colorless glass in a dynamic and effective way, but is otherwise unusual.

Realgar, disulfide of arsenic, was used in Chinese and, particularly, Daoist alchemical practice. It is assumed to have been developed at the Imperial glassworks during the Kangxi period, when production was under the directorship of Kilian Stumpf and his fellow Jesuits, who set up the glassworks for the Emperor in 1696. Since it powdered when continually exposed to light, and was poisonous, it was unsuited for vessels made to contain anything for human consumption. A substitute was produced in glass, apparently first at the Imperial glassworks in the Kangxi period, for the production of vessels of all kinds. Snuff bottles were one of the most popular forms made in large numbers to be distributed as gifts on regular occasions – one of the main reasons for the production of such large quantities at the Court.
