A MOLDED AND ENAMELED ‘SUBDUING THE DRAGON’ PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE

China, c. 1770-1830. Of flattened pear-shaped form, supported on a short oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with a lipped rim. The body is finely decorated in high relief with a continuous scene depicting a lone immortal standing on a craggy rock with his arm raised as he guides four attendants, and on the reverse surrounding a thrashing dragon, wearing only loincloths as they subdue the beast with their implements a forkpitch, banner, beaters, and a large ring, all against a neatly incised sea-green wave ground below multi-colored clouds at the neck.

The recessed base with an iron-red four-character seal mark Qianlong nianzhi.

Provenance: Old French private collection. Viviane Jutheau, Paris, 21 November 1993, lot 9. Collection Parisienne de M. B., acquired from the above. Viviane Jutheau was a French auctioneer and the first major snuff bottle specialist in France. She wrote a seminal guide on snuff bottles, which is still used today as a reference, and she was a highly influential figure for several decades in the Chinese art trade in Paris.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. Minor rubbing and flaking to enamels, minuscule losses. The iron-red mark with minor touchups.

Stopper: Jadeite
Weight: 32 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 66 mm. Diameter neck 12 mm and mouth 5 mm.

The stories of the Eight Immortals resonate deeply with the Chinese people, as the life conditions they represent - age, poverty, and wealth - are universally relatable. One famous tale recounts their legendary victory over the Dragon King. Similarly, the Dragon Subduing Arhat, a figure tied to the spread of Buddhism in China, also involves the subjugation of a dragon. His story circulated as early as the Western Jin dynasty, and by the Tang dynasty, his image was widespread. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, he was frequently depicted among the Eighteen Arhats, adorning the sides of main shrines in Buddhist temples.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related flattened ovoid snuff bottle with similar molded and enameled decoration, with a Jiaqing mark and of the period (1796-1821), in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1944.214.a.
