A LARGE PEKING WOOL ‘ONE HUNDRED BIRDS WORSHIPPING THE PHOENIX’ CARPET, LATE QING DYNASTY

China, c. 1890. Finely decorated with birds paying court to the phoenix, the king of birds. Pairs of cranes, pheasants, mandarin ducks, and sparrows are depicted in flight or perched on leafy branches and craggy rockwork, surrounding two phoenixes in a verdant landscape with pine and maple trees, with various blossoms issuing from craggy rocks, and fluttering butterflies. The central panel is surrounded by a narrow key-fret border within a band of foliate scroll interspersed with bats as well as foliate cartouches enclosing various animals against brocade grounds.

Provenance: From a private estate in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition with some wear, manufacturing irregularities, traces of use, soiling, minor fading, tiny losses.

Dimensions: Size 402 x 315 cm

One Hundred Birds (Bainiao tu) was a common subject matter in art, popular for its celebration of nature and its auspicious meaning. Sometimes known as the ‘Hundred Birds paying court to the Phoenix’ (Bainiao chao feng), the phrase carries the meaning of ‘Peace under a wise ruler,’ since the central phoenix is considered the king of the birds and hence a symbol of the emperor.

Despite the title, fewer than 100 birds are represented. The birds depicted include the crane, a symbol of longevity; the pheasant, a symbol of wealth and good wishes; and mandarin ducks, a symbol of marital happiness. Most are paired, a common feature of Chinese visual depictions of birds and animals, and a nod to the importance of balancing male and female to create harmony and unity. There are also many different flowers, including the peony, a symbol of summer and wealth, and lots of butterflies. In sum, the scene conveys ideas of seasonal harmony and good fortune, and it demonstrates the complex arrangements of auspicious motifs that developed during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
