LEE MAN FONG (1913-1988): ‘FARMER GIRL’

Oil on canvas. Finely rendered with bold, textured strokes of predominantly blue, green, and white, this painting depicts a young woman carrying a basket from the field. She wears a wide woven straw hat and hoop earrings, evoking a sense of rustic elegance. The artist skillfully uses a palette knife to create rich textures in the woman's clothing, capturing the ruggedness of her attire. This contrasts beautifully with the smooth, delicate brushwork that brings her luminous face to life, showcasing the artist's mastery in balancing texture with softness to convey both the physical and emotional depth of the subject.

Inscriptions: Lower right, signed ‘L. Fong’.

Provenance: From an old private collection in Montana, United States, acquired between the 1950s and 1970s during the couple’s travels across Asia, and thence by descent.
Condition: Excellent condition.

Dimensions: Image size 36.4 x 74.6 cm, Size incl. frame 99 x 58.8 cm.

Mounted on a wood frame with a blue fabric backing. (2)

Famed Indonesian-Chinese painter Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) was one of the most important twentieth century artists of Southeast Asia. Having studied first with a Lingnan painter and then with a teacher of western oil painting in Singapore, Lee was further able to explore western painting when he studied in Holland in the late 1940s to early 1950s. His unique blending of eastern and western painting techniques and sensitivities earned him many admirers both during his lifetime and after. In 1961, Lee became an art consultant to the Indonesian presidential palace and chief curator of its collection, positions facilitated by his experience and friendship with President Sukarno. Today, his works are in the collections of the Oei Hong Djien Museum in Magelang, Indonesia, and the National Gallery of Singapore, among others.

The current lot depicts a young woman from a Chinese peasant family. The wide woven straw hat is typical of the type worn by farmers and fishermen in southern China to protect them from harsh sunlight. The artist's keen observation of his subject, as well as the realities of her everyday life, clearly shows in this sensitive portrait.
