Sir Richard Mark Evans (1928-2012) was a British diplomat who served as ambassador to the People's Republic of China from January 1984 to May 1988. During his tenure, he and Chinese representative Zhou Nan initiated the Sino-British Joint Declaration on 26 September 1984. As the chief British representative in the Sino-British negotiations, Evans played a key role in discussions over Hong Kong's sovereignty. He also facilitated several high-profile official visits, including Queen Elizabeth II's historic visit to China in October 1986. In retirement, Evans authored a biography of Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, published in 1993 and later translated into several languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Hungarian.

Xiangfei zhu, or spotted bamboo, a native plant of Hunan, Henan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang, refers to several types of bamboo with stems that are mottled by dark spots. The stems of the spotted bamboos are generally esteemed for making the handles of Chinese brushes, used for calligraphy and painting. Early examples from brushes made of spotted bamboo date back to the 8th century, Tang dynasty, and were highly valued in China as well as Japan, as can be seen from objects imitating spotted bamboo in the Shosoin (treasure house) in Japan.
