A YELLOW-GLAZED AND INCISED 'DRAGONS' BOWL, GUANGXU MARK AND PERIOD

China, 1895-1908. The porcelain is thinly potted with deep rounded sides rising from a short foot to a gently flaring rim carved, finely incised to the exterior with a pair of ferocious five-clawed dragons with sinuous scaly bodies writhing as they pursue the flaming pearl amid swirling clouds and fire scrolls, framed by a band of ruyi-heads near the foot and leafy scrolling vines below the rim.

The interior with a stylized shou character within a double circle, covered overall with a rich glaze of egg-yolk tone thinning at the edges and darkening in the recesses. The base with an underglaze blue six-character kaishu mark da Qing Guangxu nianzhi and of the period.

Provenance: The collection of Travers Christmas Humphreys, and thence by descent. Travers Christmas Humphreys, QC (1901-1983) was a British barrister, who later became a judge at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. He wrote a number of works on Mahayana Buddhism and in his day was the best-known British convert to Buddhism. In 1924 he founded what became the London Buddhist Society, which was to have a seminal influence on the growth of the Buddhist tradition in Britain. His former home in St John's Wood, London, is now a Buddhist temple.
Condition: Old wear and firing flaws including pits and dark spots. Two small chips to the rim, two hairlines, and minuscule nibbling to the foot.
