A MOLDED DINGYAO ‘LOTUS POND’ DISH, NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY

China, 960-1127. Delicately potted with deep rounded sides supported on a short circular foot. Finely molded to the center with two carps amid swirling whorls, surrounded to the cavetto with fishes and ducks interspersed with lotus blossoms above sprays of peony, all below a double bow-string band encircling the rim.

The bowl is covered overall in a fine ivory-white glaze darkening slightly in the recesses, accentuating the raised decoration.

Inscriptions: Incised to the base, ‘guan’ (官, ‘official’).

Provenance: From a private estate in the Versailles region, France.
Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and firing irregularities. Few scratches, tiny frits to the rim.

Weight: 268.1 g
Dimensions: Diameter 20.5 cm

Production of Ding ware consisted mostly of small utilitarian wares such as dishes and bowls initially left undecorated or hand carved in the 10th to 12th centuries. From the late Northern Song period, craftsmen moved away from incised decoration to using mushroom-shaped molds which were similar to those used for casting gold and silver vessels. The clay was pressed onto the relief-decorated mold before the edges were trimmed down, to ensure the piece retained the form as well as the thinness and lightness of precious materials. This technique allowed for the manufacture of a large number of vessels, thereby satisfying the demand of the market. It also reveals the influence of precious materials on Ding wares, as it bears a resemblance to contemporaneous silver ware and brocaded textiles. Rose Kerr, in Song Ceramics, London, 1982, p. 102, remarks that Ding ware had a ‘tendency to mimic other, more precious materials such as gold and silver, huge quantities of which were stored in palace treasuries’.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Dingyao dish with fish swimming among lotus in the cavetto, in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, illustrated by He Li, in Chinese Ceramics: A New Comprehensive Survey, p. 150, no. 229.
