拍品描述
A CIZHOU RUSSET AND BLACK-GLAZED JAR, NORTHERN SONG TO JIN DYNASTY

China, 960-1234. Robustly potted, the globular body rising from a short spreading foot to a broad cylindrical neck gently tapering before the everted lip, flanked by a pair of strap handles. Covered to the horizontally ribbed interior and the exterior with a lustrous brownish-black glaze suffused with russet mottling especially around the rim, shoulder, and handles, the glaze thinning at the edges and attractively pooling as it ends well above the foot to reveal the ivory-white body.

Provenance: Roger Keverne Ltd., London, 2000. A private collection in the United States, acquired from the above at the International Asian Art Fair in New York City. A copy of the invoice from Roger Keverne, dated 1 April 2000, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price of USD 6,000 or approx. EUR 10,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation), accompanies this lot. The base with an old collector’s label inscribed ‘Northern-Song, 960-1214, 4-1-00’. Roger Keverne served as the Chairman of Asian Art in London and as the President of BADA. He began his 50-year career with Spink & Son, rising to head the Asian department by the age of only 28. He left Spink in 1992 to start his own gallery together with Miranda Clarke, his wife and business partner, in Mayfair, London, which eventually closed its doors in June 2020.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. Little flaking around one handle, few minor chips to the foot.

Weight: 697.6 g
Dimensions: Height 14.6 cm

Dark-glazed jars of this type, often with vertical ribs around the body, were produced in various sizes and shapes at a number of Cizhou kiln sites in Shandong, Henan, and Hebei provinces.

Type: Closely related
Auction: Sotheby’s New York, 15 September 2018, lot 1414
Price: USD 9,375 or approx. EUR 11,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A russet-splashed black glazed jar, Northern Song/Jin dynasty
Expert remark: Compare the related form and glaze, with similar strap handles and everted lip, albeit a taller neck and splashed decoration. Note the slightly smaller size (11.6 cm).

Auction result comparison:
Type: Related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 13 September 2018, lot 829
Price: USD 10,000 or approx. EUR 11,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A small brown-glazed ribbed jar
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, russet-suffused brownish-black glaze, and ivory-white body. The comparable with vertical ribs around the body, of smaller size (10.7 cm), and possibly with a reduced neck, lacking the typical rolled lip so often seen on this form.
