A FAMILLE VERTE BISCUIT LOTUS-FORM WATER DROPPER, KANGXI PERIOD

Published: Alice R. M. Hyland, Passion and Pursuit: The Billings Collection, Nantucket, 2002, p. 144, no. 278.
Exhibited: Nantucket Historical Association Whaling Museum, Asian Treasures from The Billings Collection, Nantucket, 26 May-1 November 2022.

China, 1662-1722. Naturalistically modelled in the form of a large open lotus pod, surrounded by upright leaves with finely incised veins, a small aperture to the surface, conjoined with a veined open lotus leaf forming the water receptacle, a stippled stem trailing down to the base, the vessel covered in vibrant glazes of green, amber, and aubergine tones.

Provenance: The Gerry P. Mack (1911-1992) Collection, and thence by descent to David and Beverly Hall Billings, Nantucket, Massachusetts, United States. David Billings is a self-described Renaissance man, researcher, and raconteur, as well as a noted scholar of Chinese art who has built an impressive collection for over fifty years, buying from dealers and auction houses including Ralph Chait, J. J. Lally, Roger Keverne, Spink, and Christie’s, among others. His wife Beverly Hall Billings, a photographer, is the daughter of the important Chinese art and snuff bottle collector Gerry P. Mack (1911-1992). Together, the Billings maintain a private museum of Asian art which Steven Chait has referred to as ‘Nantucket’s best kept secret’. The Billings generously share their collection through their private museum, open to the public, and through global exhibitions and publications. Recently, they collaborated with the Nantucket Historical Association to present their collection in the exhibition Asian Treasures from The Billings Collection.
Condition: Some wear and firing irregularities. Few nicks, minor flaking, losses and hairlines. Some chips to the tips of petals. Minor old repairs to the rim and one petal with associated touchups.

Weight: 127 g
Dimensions: Length 11.5 cm

Expert’s note:
The present lot serves multiple purposes, with a leaf-form water pot and a blossom-form dropper encircled by petals acting as brush holders.

The lotus plant, embodying both the noble symbolism of Buddhist thought (remaining pure while rising from the mud) and the enchanting beauty of southern Chinese lakes, naturally became a favored inspiration for water vessels on the scholar's desk.

Literature comparison:
Compare related famille verte lotus-leaf and lotus-pod water vessels, Kangxi, illustrated by J. P. Desroches, in Les Tresors du Lettre: Objets de la Chine imperiale, Paris, 1993, p. 7 and p. 45, and by John Ayers in The Chinese Porcelain Collection of Marie Vergottis, Lausanne, 2004, no. 87.

Auction result comparison:
