PROPERTY OF VARIOUS OWNERS MORI KANSAI (1814-1894) Taiheiki (The Chronicle of Great Peace) Meiji era (1868-1912), dated 1874 A pair of two-panel folding screens, painted in ink, color, and gold on paper, the right screen depicting three samurai standing on the shore next to roiling waves, the left screen two courtiers seated in a building within a rural setting, the right screen signed Kansai hitsu and the left screen signed Kansai Mori Kōshuku sha and dated Meiji nananen, both sealed Tachibana Kōshuku in and Tachibana-shi Shiyō 65 3/8 x 73in (166 x 185.4cm) each (2). Footnotes The Taiheiki (The Chronicle of Great Peace) is a Japanese historical prose epic written in the late 14th century covering the period from 1319 to 1367. It deals primarily with the Nanboku-chō period (1336-1392), the period of war between the Northern Court of Ashikaga Takauji in Kyoto, and the Southern Court of Emperor Go-Daigo in Yoshino.
