拍品描述
PROPERTY OF VARIOUS OWNERS STYLE OF MURATA SEIMIN (1761-1837) A Bronze Kōro (Incense Burner) Meiji era (1868-1912) Cast with intricate surface decoration in typical Seimin style, using a sophisticated version of the cire perdue (lost-wax) method, the lozenge-shaped body with slightly convex sides supported on four legs modeled with motifs inspired by ancient Chinese bronzes, the sides with dragon designs applied to a sayagata (key-fret) ground, the lid with cloud motifs formed around openings for incense smoke surrounded by a border of formal floral ornament, surmounted by a kirin, its head turned upward and its mouth open in a ferocious roar, the base with a cast mark Dainihon Bunseinen Seimin chū (Cast by Seimin of Great Japan in the Bunsei era [1817-1830]) 12in (30.5cm) high Footnotes Works with the signature of Murata Seimin enjoyed great popularity with Western collectors after the reopening of relations between Japan and the outside world, but the details of his life are somewhat obscure, beyond the facts that the most famous works attributed to his hand are a washbasin in the Benten temple on Enoshima island near Kamakura cast with thirty turtles and a set of five hundred rakan (disciples of Buddha) in the great gate of the Kenchōji temple at Kamakura. His work was widely and skillfully imitated during the Meiji era, often with marks giving his name and a Bunsei-era date. For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
