拍品描述
PROPERTY FROM A WASHINGTON DC COLLECTION ZHANG FANGJI (Qing dynasty) Luohans after Wu Bin Horizontal handscroll, ink and color on silk, signed Zhang Fangji, with three artist's seals, with a wood box and accompanied by a Japanese certificate of antiquity dated 19 November 1950. 12 5/8 x 164 1/8in (32 x 417cm) Footnotes (款)張芳寂 摹吳彬羅漢圖卷 設色絹本 手卷 清代 款識:張芳寂 鈐印:楓齋、二印漫漶 Provenance: Property from a Washington D.C. collection 來源: 華盛頓特區私人珍藏 The artist Zhang Fangji 張芳寂 is scarcely documented. However, two of his seals are included in the Japanese seal impression catalog of Chinese artists, 君臺觀印譜 (Kimi Inpu), published in 1647, p. 16. However, the two seals read Fangshu Zhangshi 芳叔張氏 and Fangshu 芳叔, rather than Fangji 芳寂. Although bearing a signature reading Zhang Fangji, this may also be a reference to Zhang Fangshu 張芳叔, a Yuan dynasty artist known as a figure painter. The depiction and arrangement of the figures, however, is taken directly from Wu Bin's (1568-1620) Sixteen Lohans painting, dated 1601 and currently in the collection of the National Palace Museum. A second, earlier version, dated 1591 and currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, repeats the figural arrangements, but omits much on the surrounding landscape For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
