Unlike tables with recessed legs that shorten the span and distribute the weight of the top, or jiaji'an 架几案 with sturdy pedestals as feet, tiaozhuo tables are seldom made excessively long as the legs are positioned at the corners. When extended to the lengths of 213cm or 244cm (seven or eight feet), such tables are prone to warping (tayao 塌腰). (Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Chicago: Art Media Resources Ltd., 1990, Vol. I, p. 59) Highlighted by the generous use of the luxurious imported huanghuali for the single-board top panel, the present lot exemplifies the maker's exceptional craftsmanship, striking a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetical impressiveness. Large waisted corner-leg tables are often seen in studio and garden settings in Ming dynasty paintings and woodblock illustrations. See an example of a red-lacquered waisted table with giant's arm braces and horse hoof feet in Qiu Ying 仇英 (1494-1552)'s painting Tong Yin Zhou Jing 桐蔭晝靜 (Resting at Day in the Shade of Paulownia) (Fig.2); another table, with an openwork-high waist and beaded legs is shown at the opening of the handscroll Lanting Xiuqi Tu 蘭亭修褉圖 (Gathering at the Lanting Pavilion) by the late Ming painter Li Zongmo 李宗謨 (a. 16th-17th century) (Fig.3), and a high-waisted long table with spandrels in an illustration in Erke Pai'an Jingqi 二刻拍案驚奇 (Slapping the Table in Amazement II), edited by Ling Mengchu 凌濛初 (1580-1644) and published in 1632 by Shangyou Tang 尚友堂 (Fig.4) In addition to its rare size, this table is so far the only known example of its kind with drawers. For comparable pieces without drawers, see a slightly longer table of the same height illustrated in Gustav Ecke, Chinese Domestic Furniture, New York, Dover Publications, Inc., 1986, reprint; first edition 1944), no. 9, p. 10, then from the collection of Prof. and Mrs. H.F. MacNair (1891-1947). Further comparisons can be made with a deeper painting table in Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, Nicholas Grindley and Anita Christy, Chinese Furniture: One Hundred Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection, New York, Privately Published, 1996, Vol. I, no. 59, pp. 160-61. For a smaller square table of a similar type with curved braces, see Sarah Handler, Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Berkeley and Los Angeles, University of California Press, 2001, p. 190, fig. 12.10 Lot Symbols W Y For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
