拍品描述
PROPERTY FROM VARIOUS OWNERS A RARE AND IMPOSING CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER BRUSH Ming Dynasty, 16th century Finely carved with bold designs depicting a continuous landscape with the central scene of a hermit standing on the bridge with his servant holding a guqin wrapped in cloth, upstream at the riverbank a younger scholar with two servants each holding an offering dish, a towering gnarled old pine surrounded by mountain peaks, the three-storied pagoda and a temple nestled between distant mountains, all deeply carved and over a diaper and wave ground, a deeply carved shou character at the end of the brush holder. handle 9 3/4in (24.7cm) long; overall 13in (33cm) long (Inscribed Japanese wood box and brocade bag). Footnotes 明 十六世紀 珍罕剔紅松壽圖毫筆 Provenance: A&J Speelman, London Published/Exhibited: A&J Speelman, Chinese Works of Art, London, 2008, no. 50 來源: 倫敦 A&J Speelman 古董行 出版/展覽: A&J Speelman,中國藝術,倫敦,2008 年,圖版編號 50 The deeply carved cinnabar lacquer and the thoughtful configuration of figures walking through the lush landscape represent the finest workmanship of the Ming lacquer. The matt surface treatment of the pine tree, contrasting the soft shine of the polished lacquer, is another testimony of the artisan's brilliant creativity. Compare the carved cinnabar lacquer brush and cover of this rare form and quality, decorated with boys walking through the landscape and also with a shou character at the end of the brush, illustrated by Zhang Rong (ed.), The Creation of Natural Immensity and Grandeur: The Yang Ming Shan Fang Collection of Lacquer from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Beijing, 2020, pp. 112-115, no. 33. Compare also the small carved cinnabar lacquer brush pot depicting the 'pine and longevity' subject, also deeply carved and skillfully configured, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colors: Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, p. 95, no. 085, described as Ming dynasty, 16th-17th century.
