拍品描述
PROPERTY FROM THE ALAN AND SIMONE HARTMAN COLLECTION A SMALL GILT BRONZE SEATED BODHISATTVA Tang Dynasty The deity with a benevolent expression, wearing a high hair bun fitted with a jeweled crown flanked by ribbon knots, the long sash wrapped around the shoulders and draped to either side, his right hand raised and holding a flaming pearl, his left hand resting on the left knee with right leg pendant supported by a lotus blossom, the jeweled necklaces converged at the chest with two long strings extended over the voluminous drapery, the back with a perforated square tab for insertion of a Mandorla, the waisted seat with stepped base, overall covered with rich gilding. 4 5/16in (10.9cm) high Footnotes 唐 鎏金銅菩薩坐像 The present example may have belonged to a larger altar group, placed amongst the bodhisattvas and Buddhist disciples surrounding a Buddha. It is difficult to determine the iconography when out of context, but a Tang dynasty gilt bronze bodhisattva of similar pose in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is tentatively identified as Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, and illustrated by Leidy, Wisdom Embodied: Chinese Buddhist and Daoist Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, p. 177, no. A33. Compare the similar gilt bronze seated bodhisattva supported by a pedestal base, but crudely cast compared to the present example, from the Kosugi Sōichi Collection and now in the Hamamatsu City Museum, illustrated in Chūgoku no kondōbutsu, sekibutsu: Hamamatsu-shi Bijutsukan shozō Kosugi Sōichi korekushon, Tokyo, 1994, p. 77, no. 51. Compare also the gilt bronze bodhisattva of this type, from the collection of the Sano Art Museum, Mishima, illustrated in the catalog of the special exhibition, Chūgoku no kondōbutsu: tokubetsuten, Nara, Yamato Bunka-kan, 1992, p. 115, no. 83. Another similar gilt bronze bodhisattva supported by a square stand and with an openwork halo behind the head, in the collection of the Shanghai Museum is illustrated by Ji Chongjian, Zhongguo jintong fo, Taipei, 1995, p. 132, no. 74.
